Why Mental Health Is Just as Important as Physical Health

Mental health represents a condition of well-being that supports an individual's ability to prosper and succeed in everyday life. It includes emotional strength, a feeling of purpose, and the ability to form meaningful relationships that improve our overall quality of life.

But do we need to stop just there? - Indeed not!

The inextricable relationship between your mental & physical health

Both physical and mental well-being are vital components of your overall health, and they are intertwined. You can enhance your physical and mental well-being by concentrating on each other.

Although the physical and chemical functions of the brain play a major role in mental health, the brain is not the only source. A constant, reciprocal relationship between biology, environment, and life shapes mental health.

There’s no denying that our bodies are impacted by our mental health. Depression, for instance, raises the chance of getting long-term health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Conversely, our mental health can be negatively impacted by poor physical health. Mental health disorders are more likely to occur in people with ongoing or chronic medical health conditions such diabetes, cancer, and traumatic brain injury.

Let's walk you through the statistical data as cited by UNICEF

  • 1 in 10 people in India experience some sort of mental health conditions (approx. 10.6% of the population).
  • 7.3% of young persons (18–29 years) face total mental illness.
  • The NCERT Survey (2022) indicated that 11% of pupils felt anxiousness, 14% had severe emotions, and 43% suffered mood swings.

Additionally, about 20% to 28% of older adults suffer from depression or common mental health disorders, with the overall prevalence of psychiatric issues reaching up to 41% in community settings and over 64% in old-age homes.

The statistics are truly shocking. Millions of individuals in India suffer from mental disorders on a regular basis, but unfortunately, many continue to remain silent victims of such issues because of the stigma associated with mental health problems. Each statistic represents an individual and their lives need to be acknowledged and taken seriously. It is important to understand that mental health should not be considered as a sign of weakness and should receive the same attention as physical health.
